City of Cape Town calls for provision of three-month remote working visa

Cape Town has been ranked as one of the best cities in the world for remote working according to a new study by global housing rental platform, Nestpick.

Scoring 16th, the Mother City ranks higher than locations such as New York, Athens, and Barcelona on the list of seventy-five cities, proving the City of Cape Town’s case for the need for a remote work visa.

The index score is based on a range of factors including cost of living, infrastructure, leisure activities and overall liveability.

This once again proves that Cape Town is a top class, affordable destination for digital nomads who typically stay longer than ninety days in a destination.

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management, Alderman James Vos, will be making submissions to National Government for provisions in the Immigration Act to allow for a remote working visa for a period longer than three months.

The City’s Enterprise and Investment team have already incorporated the position into our strategic marketing approach known as the Six Pillars: Visit, Live, Work, Study, Play and Invest in Cape Town” he comments.

In a rent remote work webinar that the City of Cape Town hosted, stakeholders at key tourism and hospitality organisations voiced their support on how and why Cape Town should appeal to digital nomads.

The remote work model is not just a trend; it is here to stay. Let us fully capitalise on what we as a city can offer these 21st century workers”.

By encouraging more of them to choose Cape Town, we will be boosting the economy as they will spend more time and money in our city. They will also amplify the message among their friends, family, and networks about Cape Town being a prime destination for work and play” he concludes.
